Harman Parrish Atelier | Todd Gutmann Exhibition
Location during Art Walk EAST:
Stop 19
824 Exposition Avenue, Suite 8
We're excited to be part of the Art Walk EAST and welcome both familiar faces and first-time visitors to Harman-Parrish Atelier. One of our favorite things about being in Exposition Park is the opportunity to meet people who might have wandered in simply out of curiosity and leave with a newfound appreciation for a local artist. Whether you're an avid collector, looking for your first piece, or just interested in seeing what's happening in the Dallas art community, we hope you'll stop by, explore the gallery, and say hello. We love talking about the art, introducing visitors to the artists behind it, and getting to know our neighbors.
Story and creative journey
Harman-Parrish Atelier is an artist-owned gallery and working studio in Dallas's Exposition Park, founded by Walker Harman and Rhody Parrish. Alongside a rotating calendar of exhibitions featuring local and emerging artists, both founders maintain a permanent presence in the gallery through their own work. Walker, a Dallas native, studied law in New York City, where he spent time at the Metropolitan Museum of Art studying the paintings of Claude Monet. A self-taught artist, his work is largely abstract, often created on a grand scale with expressive movement, layered color, and an energy reminiscent of Jackson Pollock. Rhody's practice centers on ceramics and sculpture, with an interest in form, texture, and the relationship between art and the spaces we inhabit. His background in interior design also influences his approach to the gallery, where the presentation of art is as important as the work itself. Together, we've created a space that reflects our belief that art should be approachable, personal, and part of everyday life. We love introducing people to artists they might not otherwise encounter, connecting collectors with work they genuinely respond to, and giving Dallas artists a place to grow. While our own work remains a year-round part of the gallery, visitors during the November 7 East Dallas Art Walk will also have the opportunity to experience Through the Green, a solo exhibition by Todd Gutmann featuring a new collection of paintings inspired by the world of golf.
Inspiration and artistic perspective
Our inspirations come from different places, but we share a love for art that makes people feel something. Walker's work is heavily influenced by the Impressionists and Abstract Expressionists, particularly Monet and Pollock. He's drawn to movement, color, and the freedom of creating something without a predetermined outcome. Rhody finds inspiration in the relationship between art, design, and everyday life. With a background in interior design and a passion for ceramics and sculpture, he's interested in how objects can be both beautiful and personal, and how the spaces we inhabit influence our experience of art. As gallery owners, we're constantly inspired by the artists around us. Dallas has an incredible creative community, and one of the most rewarding parts of what we do is bringing artists and collectors together. Sometimes it's introducing someone to their first original piece of art, other times it's watching an unexpected connection form between an artist and someone who loves their work. Those experiences are what keep us excited about creating and sharing art.
Creative process
Each piece usually starts as one thing and ends up becoming something entirely different. We both tend to work intuitively, allowing the materials and the process to guide us rather than following a strict plan. For Walker, painting is about movement, color, and experimentation. Working on large canvases gives him the freedom to build layers, respond to what's happening on the surface, and let the composition evolve naturally. Rhody approaches ceramics and sculpture with a similar curiosity. Clay has a way of making its own decisions, and sometimes the most interesting results come from embracing imperfections or taking a piece in an entirely different direction than originally intended. That same spirit carries over into Harman-Parrish Atelier. While our own artwork has a permanent place in the gallery, a large part of what we do is organize rotating exhibitions featuring local artists. Each show becomes a creative process of its own, from discovering new work and collaborating with artists to figuring out how everything comes together in the space. We love that the gallery is constantly changing and that every exhibition brings new perspectives, new people, and new conversations.
What would most like visitors to know
What we'd most like people to know is that Harman-Parrish Atelier is more than a traditional art gallery. We're both practicing artists, and our own work is a permanent part of the space, but we're equally passionate about creating opportunities for other artists in Dallas. Throughout the year, we organize exhibitions featuring local artists working across different mediums, styles, and disciplines. Each exhibition brings a new perspective to the gallery, and we love seeing how the space transforms with every show. One of the most rewarding parts of what we do is introducing people to art they might never have encountered otherwise. We want visitors to feel comfortable asking questions, getting to know the artists, and discovering work that speaks to them. You don't have to know anything about art to appreciate it, and you certainly don't have to be an established collector to walk through our doors. At the heart of it all, we want Harman-Parrish Atelier to be a place where artists feel supported, visitors feel welcome, and meaningful connections happen naturally.
Exhibitions
Harman-Parrish Atelier is pleased to present Through the Green, a solo exhibition featuring an entirely new collection of paintings by Dallas artist Todd Gutmann, created specifically for the show. The exhibition runs October 29 through November 19 and will be on view during the East Dallas Art Walk on November 7. Known for his bold use of color, expressive brushwork, and loosely rendered figures, Gutmann has a distinctive approach to capturing familiar subjects. His previous work has explored everything from Texas cowboys to Dallas landmarks, including the beloved Club Schmitz. In Through the Green, Gutmann turns his attention to golf, reimagining the sport through vibrant landscapes, abstracted figures, and richly layered compositions. His paintings blur the line between representation and abstraction, transforming familiar scenes on the golf course into something playful, atmospheric, and unexpectedly beautiful. We look forward to welcoming Art Walk visitors to Harman-Parrish Atelier to experience the collection in person.
